Henry recieved Markham's letter when he returned from the State Teachers' Assoc. He is grateful for Markham's contribution to his work. He sent him a copy of the History of the State Normal School at San Jose. It may concern the references that Markham needed. He read the California Story of the Files and found interesting references to Markham in it.

Markham, Edwin, 1852-1940

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
